DIY Chalkboard Paint and Creative Ideas

Chalkboards aren’t just for school anymore!  Chalkboard paint is all the rage right now.  Why? Because you can do so many fantastic things with it!  And if you’re imagining that ugly muted olive green color of the chalkboard in your 10th grade math class, think again.  You can have your chalkboard paint in any color imaginable.  The very best part is that you can make it yourself, which translates to: low cost! Check out the simple DIY chalkboard paint recipe and awesome ideas of what to do with it.

DIY Chalkboard Paint Recipe This recipe is for a small area, but you can double or triple it depending on what you’re painting.

  • flat-finish latex paint in your preferred shade
  • unsanded tile grout
  • 150 grit sandpaper
  1. In a container add 1 cup of the paint and 2 tablespoons of unsanded tile grout.
  2. Mix the paint and tile grout carefully with a paint stirrer until there are no clumps.
  3. Use a roller or sponge paintbrush to apply the paint to a primed or painted surface. Make sure you go over the same spot many times to get even, full coverage.
  4. Use the 150 grit sandpaper to smooth the painted area after it has dried.  Wipe off any dust.
  5. To condition your new chalkboard surface, rub the side of a piece of chalk over the area and wipe away with a barely damp sponge.

Creative (& Cheap!) Chalkboard Paint Ideas

  • Paint a section of your child’s room so they can add custom (and constantly changing) art work to their decor!
  • Create a wall calendar in an office by painting squares of different shades.
  • Paint panels and frame them for a moveable sign–great for a menu board in the kitchen!
  • Dip the flat bottom of wine glass stems into the paint.  Have guests write their names on the glasses in chalk and never confuse glasses at a party again.
  • Paint place cards to show guests to their seats, or use them to identify food you have placed out.
  • Paint anything you want to personalize or decorate (temporarily, of course)! Mugs, tables, fridges, plates… the options are endless!

Belle (Beauty and the Beast) Party

Want to give your little princess a royal birthday party?

Invites: Invite your little one’s friends to “be your guest” at a special birthday celebration by handing out magic mirror invitations, which might remind partygoers of the mirror that Belle used in the movie to “see” what was happening in the outside world.

Décor and Desserts: Every Belle birthday celebration calls for a candelabrum that features the likeness of the lovable character, Lumiere. Make this before the party and use it as a table centerpiece. Desert options can be fairly simple or more complex for this party. The easy-to-make strawberry rose shortcake symbolizes the wilting rose in the film. Another fun choice is to use a Belle doll to make an elegant princess cake. Yellow food coloring will help you create a dress similar to the one that Belle wears during the memorable ballroom dance scene.

Party Craft: Guests can pretend they are attending a fancy ball when they create (with the help of adults) their very own paper flower corsage wearable that goes well with any outfit!
